What the heck?!
Car-Free Ski-to-Sea team Mostly Old Friends is looking for a support rider for the mountain legs at this year's race over Memorial Day weekend.
You would ride up the mountain with our racers the day before the race, camp out or stay at the Mountaineers Lodge, and help tote gear up and down.
Team Mostly Old Friends
Most of the current team members have done this race for over 2 decades (one of us, since 1973) and have been in the Car Free division for the last 6 years.
We range in age from the mid-20s to the mid-70s and are actively training and/or racing, year-round.
We also enjoy a good pint to replenish lost calories and feed our souls when appropriate.
We've taken 2nd or 3rd place for this division 4 times, so I'd say we're semi-competitive -- not Olympic Gold Medalists, but also not wearing costumes (though everyone looks good in Lycra)!
What does Car-Free mean?
It means that all our team members get to and from our race leg positions by bicycle. We carry or tow our gear (the canoe and kayak trailers are loads of fun) and feel good about not burning gas or being stuck in the traffic flow of all the other team's cars.
This means that the mountain-leg racers and support folks bike up the mountain highway (5000ft/50mi) the day before the race and camp out or rent a bunk in the Mt Baker Mountaineer's Lodge.
If you stay at the lodge, you get a warm bunk, food, and you’re right near the race start.
If you camp at Silver Firs campground you will likely be treated to food and drink by a family who loves to take care of the car-free folks!
You would wait for the skiers to join you after their leg, and then help divvy-up gear to transport down the mountain (the road biker would like to race w/o carrying their camping gear).
After that, you ride back down to Bellingham, hopefully joining us on the podium, and come to the post-race party in the Columbia 'hood.
We always have fun and come back with good stories. You can too, if you join our team.
Join the fun!
Let me know if you're interested – We’d love to have you!
